Dec. 23

We are enjoying our visit to LaGonave. We again attended the Anse-a-Galet Wesleyan church this morning. As we weren't asked to speak last week and we are not visitors having attended regularly while living on LaGonave so we thought we were safe. But today Pastor Dan Irving was asked to introduce Matt and Heather-their visiting college students and we were asked if we wanted to say a few words. Cory was nice and spoke for the family.

On Saturday Kris saw the hospital patients along with one of the senior nurses while the rest of the family went on a 3 hour hike up the ravine. The Friday we went as a family to market. There is a big new building that houses the meat market on the outside and has stalls for vendors on the inside. There is a fee for setting up shop inside-so only a couple vendors and empty space when we stopped in for a look.

Our whole family was able to find sandals along with a bit of ribbon, some popcorn and a couple cabbages. Cory was surprised about the cost-the lady was asking about $3 American. He had picked up one cabbage and then put it down and picked up a second one. We had met one of the gals who cooks for the guest house and she was with us to show us where the popcorn was located. Well, because he didn't want her to look bad he finally settled on a price that he still thought was to high [$2]-but then learned he had been bartering for both heads of cabbage not just one.

The market has grown since summer. When we asked about that we were informed that the population of the town has grown as many people have returned to LaGonave from other countries, as deportations increased. We are thankful that the water situation has improved as there were problems this summer and more people mean more water is needed.

[Found this Post still in drafts-sorry it is late]
