At the University they are clearing some land to build additional housing. The trees that were cut down will be made into boards and smaller pieces into charcoal. In Haiti wooden boards are rough cut as in the picture. First a small platform is made for the higher guy to stand on. Then once the log is in place two men work together to cut the boards.
I imagine this is much how boards were made years ago in the States. Limited tools and lots of muscle. The boards are rough and generally sold or used in the rough state.
Imported wood is expensive here and most woods need to be treated for termites to last. Some of our door frames and window frames are being attacked by termites from time to time but spraying with a can of bug spray makes them go elsewhere for at least fa few weeks. Some of the old furniture that was here for years are missing drawers or shelves due to hungry termites.
But there doesn't seem to be the ants in the house here as much as we had on LaGonave. We do have fire ants in the yard-a literal pain when taking down laundry from the line. Ants also eat small holes into clothes-extra ventilation that we don't need here in the North.
