Sunday morning services in Haiti and Sunday school are each usually a good two hours long so we usually just attend the main chursh services. The following photo was taken in a church in Cap Haitian. In the sanctuary were 9 different adult Sunday school classes going on at the same time. We arrived in time for the class in front of us to benefit as they counted us as visitors. [Our kids did excellent sitting for 3 hours-even though mom couldn't translate everything] With 9 different teachers teaching and asking questions-it can be very distracting and loud. Following Sunday school, all classes met in the sanctuary. The class reports are given: number of people, visitors, Bibles, songbooks, and offering. After this time then there is a time of questions for each class. This may include the class standing and reciting the verse of the week. Two boys about Eli's age were at a disadvantage with just the two of them but were applauded for their correct answers. After the quizzing period, banners are awarded to the classes who earned them. Our class earned one of the visitor banners, thanks to us.
The only place in the States that I have ever seen a similar format was on a work team to Kentucky. I wonder how many Christians would improve their verse memorization if required to stand in front of the congregation and recite?
The topics we have heard being studied recently include tithing and living a holy life. One of the smaller churches we visited one class received all the banners-as they were the only class to be on time-the adult ladies. They were also given pieces of hard candy recognizing their efforts, while being held up as an example to the other people who had by then arrived for church.
