We had a good school day today. Gas is now 12$ a gallon on the street and none of the stations are selling. There is talk that a tanker may try to deliver by sea but no one knows when. With major bridges down in many parts of Haiti there is a lot to be done.
We took a short walk to see the damage to our neighbors to the South of us, just over the fence. Many lost trees-Haitian oak, breadnuts, and breadfruit trees were damaged. Also areas of small landslides and erosion. The Haitian goverment has delayed the start of school for one month.
We continue to enjoy school at home and are thankful with the price of fuel that the truck can sit here most days. We also spent part of today sorting though clothes and supplies so that we can donated items to the victims of flooding in Goniaves.
It is amazing to me how even here one can accumulate 'stuff'. Some of the clothes had survived other times of donations because of their history: 'I had that in high school', 'That was my medical school interview dress', 'That shirt was a gift in Brazil for our engagement'..... But here in the North it is harder to keep clothes smelling clean and mildew free so out they go to be used by those truly in need. Really I should of gotten rid of most of them years ago. I guess I am learning with age that stuff really doesn't matter-it is the eternal things that need our time, energy and focus. Tomorrow I need to look some more as I'm sure there are needed items still hiding around this house somewhere that could be put to good use rather that sitting here waiting for some day....
