Sept. 29

Cory left for the Dominican this morning about 4:30 a.m. He is traveling with our district superintendent Pastor Denord as well as some other people. Pastor Jonus from Cap Haitian will travel with him the whole trip as Pastor Denord is spending the week.

They will be going to Santiago. We really don't know what to expect. Cory is primarily looking for fruit trees and plants as well as supplies for the team coming in November.

Eli and Anna are feeling well and we have started our fifth week of school. All are enjoying the family time. Without electricity it would of been very quiet if the kids were gone away at school all day. They provide the noise and music in the house.

Discouraging new reports about conditions in Haiti. How the 'misery index' is rising.

The Miami Herald's JACQUELINE Charles on the 26th reported: "But the overall response to the devastation has fallen short of requests. The United Nations is struggling to raise $108 million for its emergency Haiti appeal, and the Haitian government is also having a hard time raising $123 million it needs to replace crops swept away by the storms.

''If the international community wants to do something useful . . . that would be to help the Haitians maximize their potential,'' said Préval, who will visit South Florida next week to address The Miami Herald's annual The Americas Conference and take his plea to the diaspora community.

Lobbying for a global reconstruction effort on behalf of Haiti, he said, ''We are skeptical with regard to the imported food aid, and traditional way in which this is done. We have to break this paradigm of charity in our approach to international cooperation,'' he said.

`Charity has never helped any country get out of underdevelopment.''
