Pastor Rigo-hospital administrator

Well our new hospital administrator, Pastor Rigo has been hard at work each day this week.

He is working on a list of things that need to be fixed up like the roof, screens, paint. He also has the task of getting the plumbing fixed for running water, a good power source, better lighting.

Today he had a nurse threatening to quit. Why was she so upset-last night she had to go into the pharmacy for something and saw a large snake. Haitians are raised to be frightened of all snakes and frogs. I tried to point out that it was likely helping with the rodent problem but no one seemed convinced. They told me I didn't understand their culture. I told them that if they discovered the location of the snake or any others that they could call on Cory to relocate it rather than kill it. Time will tell. But there is a new reason for the roof repair to occur as soon as possible-those holes need to be filled in before we lose a nurse.

Pastor Rigo is also going thought the stuff we have here and there. Some items are items that are expired or that should of never been sent to Haiti. It is funny what people send at times-small suture for heart or nerve surgery that you need a magnifying lens to sew, or items that can only be used with some kind of high tech piece of machinery. The really sad part is not that it can't be used here but that someone took the time and energy to ship the items to Haiti. And even worse is the money spent on transport and customs. Not all donated items are charged customs but shipping to Haiti and transport in Haiti are expensive.

Rigo is also looking at how to increase the number of patients being seen-the average day clinic is running about 10. Perhaps a free consultation day. People that can affort to travel have many choices for their health care with many clinics in the area in addition to other sources of treatment-pharmacies, 'leaf doctors', witch doctors, and people selling pills. I don't have any real answers other than to improve the quality of care and let people find out word of mouth from satisfied patients.

We ended our talk agreeing that the clinic is the Lord's and we need to pray and watch what He will do while doing our best.
