Planting Peach Palms

The winter storm that froze much of Florida gave us an inch of rain Thursday night.

Friday morning still had some sprinkles and looked like a rainy day.

After visiting many gardens and talking and talking and then talking some more, Cory agreed to rent a garden for the planting of peach palms.

Excited to branch out to the first extension / rental garden.

The advantage of having additional heavy rain from this big cold front to water in the trees and the threat of the river being impassable for days motivated the decision to go ahead and at least get the plants to the garden.

66 peach palm and 2 jackfruit were loaded and driven to the far side of the floodplain, which is about half-way to the garden.

From there it is about a 10 or 15 minute walk.

A few workers were still hoeing the garden until the occasional rains sent them home.

They will plant corn here soon. This garden contains good soil.

Cory, Gener and Yvon were able to get it all planted with a few short breaks for the heavier rains, finishing by 2pm.

Room remains for a few more trees.

Now Cory's attention and thoughts turn to a near by hillside garden that suffers from erosion and severely depleted soil.

This location, if it works out, would serve to demonstrate soil renewal techniques like ground cover and erosion prevention crops.

Saturday morning, we are up to 4 inches of rain and light rain still falls, on and off.

That borrowed garden does look like great soil. Those seedlings are wonderfully green and healthy.
