Saturday / Sunday Zimba

'74? Land Rover

We are staying at the Overflow Guesthouse while in Zimba.

Saturday morning we walked to farmland where foundations of housing duplexes are being dug.

A group is helping finance this to help with the housing shortage in this rapidly growing town.

Saturday afternoon we visited a family with a large  farm. The mother studied at Jembo many years ago.

There are mango trees in Zimba but almost no other fruits other than a few small native fruits.

She had just planted 20 grafted avocado trees from a nursery in Lusaka. They were planted in small pits in an area with poor drainage and were suffering from the recent rains.

Corn grow well and is a major part of the diet

Cory was able to advise that unlike mango, they are sensitive to flooding and advised moving most of them to a nearby higher part of the property.

We were given a hike through the bush, used as pasture, to the back part of the farm where a large reservoir is formed by a dam. It only goes dry in years of drought.

Not very far from the home, a tree was pointed out where a man was charged and killed by an elephant at night just 6 or 7 years ago.

Sunday we walked about 20 minutes to visit Pilgrim Wesleyan Church.

We enjoyed the worship with excellent music and teaching.
