Oct. 16 Artemisia Update

Many of you will remember how excited we were with the growth of the Artemisia in the North after having trouble with flowering on LaGonave.

Here is the Artemisia garden as it looked in June.

Now it looks like Artemisia will have to be a seasonal crop and not grow year round even in the North.

The yellow plants are a few Artemisia plants going to seed. Cory has already replanted some of the area with vegetables.

When we returned to Haiti Cory took cuttings from the best plants but as you will note these cuttings have also blossomed. Once the plants blossom they will die as they are annuals.

Cory estimates that he has enough seed for about 8 years. Artemisia seeds are very tiny- like a powder. In January Cory will start a new batch from seeds and then propagate them by cuttings as soon as the plants are big enough to take cuttings. He also hopes a localy adapted variety will develop from the plants that are allowed to go to seed.
