March 25

Recently friends of ours who were missionaries to Haiti and now are serving in Peru had an update that talked about the need to drink "Flex juice".

OK it is Roselle juice but if there was a juice that could help one to flex better as life changes I'd be interested in getting some.

Today while waiting for labs I was reading my Family Practice medicine Journal and came across the following definition of successful coping "is characterised by flexibility, creative thinking, willingness to try new things, action orientation, working cooperatively with others and the ability to tolerate frustration or other strong emotions."

I think that all healthy, long term missionaries have learned successful coping. An example:

Last week Wednesday we were told that we were to host a fellow missionary for the weekend, a lunch for the committee of about 10 and meals the rest of the weekend for two additional guests. OK-Cory hadn't gone to market yet, no problem.

Thursday night we learn that they are unable to come on Friday but will be here on Saturday am. No problem.

Friday noon we learn that the missionary will be accompanied by his wife and daughters. OK-mental run thought of meals, adjusting sleeping arrangements, plans for Sunday morning church and afternoon. No problem. Cooks are here making cookies and bread.

Friday night-missed a phone call but received the E-mail that the family had decided not to come after all. To much travel, so they needed some down time. Understandable-no problem. Back to the first arrangement.

Saturday morning. Phone and E-mail messages reporting that the ferries didn't run from LaGonave and the sea was bad. So no visitors this weekend. Can freeze some of the extra food, hadn't gone to market, and the house is clean for Easter. No problem.

Maybe next weekend or not.
