Port Margot Market Day

Ready to go shopping? Today I went with Cory to the biggest market day of the week at Port Margot. We guess the open air market covers about 3 city blocks. Like a supermarket you can buy food, clothes, shoes, house wears, books, charcoal and other items. Another guess is that there were about 2000+ people present. We made a bit of a stir where ever we went being the only whites or foreigners.

Now it is about 85+ degrees out and unless the seller has a umbrella or little roof everything is in the sun. The smells are an interesting combination of fruits, vegetables, people, dried fish, cooking food, and breezes of fresh air.

Many items are sold by the cup/container: rice, beans, corn meal, flour, corn, small dime size dried fish. Smaller containers of salt, pepper, spices are also sold. Some people have pre-packaged their items in plastic bags.

The price is usually negotiable. But if not too high Cory will take the first price. If to high he will either try negotiating it lower or move on to another vendor. Today we were able to get: tomatoes, cabbage, garlic, grapefruit, onions, limes, cooking bananas, carrots and chayote. Other food items we purchased: spaghetti noodles, pop corn, saltine crackers, catchup.
Non food items-a new church hymnal with plastic cover and laundry soap. Looked for another plastic shopping bag after Cory's was getting heavy but didn't see any at that time.
Cory was doing the shopping while Kris took pictures and asked questions. I don't normally go shopping. One lady got all upset and started yelling when I took a photo. I'm careful not to take a picture directly at someone without permission so she startled me. I put a hand on her shoulder and told her not to be upset. I explained that we had moved to Fauche and had come to help. That I would show the photos to people who pray for Haiti. She was soon smiling and others were saying "Amen' and we moved on.
