Garden Update

Two weeks of daily rain made it hard to keep up with the rapidly growing weeds.

Avocado seedling
When learning the months of the year we learned that March is the month of the most rains...however we did get 15  inches of rain in January and average annual rainfall here is about 24".

Many of the avocado pits planted between the rows of soy beans are starting to grow!

We recently enjoyed our first sweet corn from the garden.

Also growing is some field corn and popcorn , potatoes and sweet potatoes, tomatoes, squash, peas, cucumbers [lots-enough to share with the neighbors], egg plant, and peppers.

Artemisia annua - malaria medicine
More unusual items include: aloe vera, false roselle [Florida cranberry hibiscus] roselle, chia, and cape gooseberry, and medicinal artemisia.

Herbs are also doing well: basel, mint, lemon grass, rosemary, marjoram, and thyme.

The guys have been working on trying to keep up with the lawn!

No lawn mowers here.

Instead the guys use a long skinny flat bar that's bent a bit on the end.

Swinging it back and forth cuts the lawn...lots of arm exercise.

Fritz also exercises using our new rake to gather up the cut grass to be used for mulching around trees or down the isles of the garden.

Some of the grass is very hard to cut..wire grass, so using clippers can be easier than the bar.

Cory and Kris - happy to reconnect with you. You may not remember me, but I used to bring teams to Haiti several years ago. I now come to Zambia every year. Looking for a good way to have conversations with you but couldn't find an email address? Or another way to stay in contact?
