Date Palms

Here is a photo of one of the date palms with fruit in the WISH gardens on LaGonave. We pray it helps feed some people during this difficult time.

One seedling date palm fruited multiple times per year, every year. Of the commercial varieties we planted, about 22 years ago, only a few fruited, and not every year.

They probably do not get enough winter cold weather most years but several are fruiting this year.

If they ripen during the rainy season they can be picked before they spoil to be boiled. Then they taste like sweet potato.

Cory has been watching for commercial varieties in the nurseries here and germinated some seed from dates. With the 7 month long dry season here it looks like ripening could be during dry enough weather.
