We didn't have school today but still managed some learning. Eli helped me mix up the pie crust for the blueberry pie that he requested instead of cake. Yesterday we opened up a gift from a team member -a package of butterscotch chips we had saved for Eli's birthday cookies.
This morning he and Anna enjoyed looking at his gift from Anna and playing lots of Game boy. Normally the Game boys are only used for travel and maybe Saturday afternoons if all the week's schoolwork is done.
Noon was one of his favorite meals-chicken pot pie and cookies. He opened his gift from Cory and I. I had worried a bit because Eli had been hoping for a new computer or Game Boy game. But he was happy to get the game of Risk. We spent the afternoon learning the rules and playing our first game.
We were so into the game that Creole lessons were forgotten until the teacher called. So we're in a break while Chris and Kathleen are in class, Cory plants the seeds that came in the mail today, and the kids and I enjoy Gilligan's Island. [In our defense we have worked hard at school this year and if you look for them there are teachable moments in the shows. OR at least topics that can be discussed]
Tonight Eli with get the red "You are Special Today!" plate. We will enjoy hamburgers and homemade potato chips along with the pie. Then likely play part two of the Risk game.
We're thankful for the young man Eli is becoming. We truly enjoy him. He has a quick mind and has important goals of improving lives of others. His French and Creole are improving. He enjoys science and math. And the great books we get to read.

Let me warn you - we had to get a separate table to set up Risk on because those games can go on FOREVER. Meaning it won't be over before the next meal. Sometimes my boys spend so much time getting their strategies devised that by the time they're ready to actuall put the first piece into play it's time to get back to school work or time for a meal! It's a great thinking game, though!
Happy Birthday Eli!
Love the idea of the special red plate :) Ewok likes Risk too, we've never watched Gilligan's Island although I remember it from my childhood. But my teens would be delighted to join you for hamburgers and home made fries!
We had a lot of fun but the wars had to be postponed because of late bed times. Mom called it at 10 to 9. Most of us are already in bed by 7:30 and 8:30. School should be interesting today.
The fries and hamburgers were good. So was the pie. Each is rare for us to have as it is hard to get the beef, Irish potatoes and pie filling. But it made his day special.
Back to school!
Happy Birthday Eli.
We don't have Risk...you'll have to tell us if we should get it! Love the old pics of "little" Eli. I have to admit that every year when I get to see him my brain has to endure a moment of shock to make height adjustments ;-)
