Hike across the valley-Cory Post

I wanted to see the local gardens during this drought so Gener and I went for a hike across the valley and up the hill on the other side.

The gardens that are getting some shade from trees tend be doing better than those in full sun. Gardens of Mango, avocado, breadfruit and breadnut trees with banana, cacao, or vegetables under the trees are very productive.

Many of the hillsides have been gardened and where the soil has been depleted they are just used for pasture but the grass grows very slowly. Ideally these would be replanted to fruit trees, bamboo, and nitrogen fixing (soil improving) trees.

A few kids at one of the houses we passed.

An orange tree that hasn't been "weeded" lately of its orchids and bromeliads.

The mission is well hidden in this photo, under the trees, near the middle of the photo, on the other side of the river.
