Lockdown Day #12 Garden Update

First day of no commercial flights out of Haiti.

We are still waiting for a soaking rain to break this strong dry season.

A few of the avocado seedlings dried up but with weekly waterings almost every thing else has survived.

Some of the apples  in the field are sprouting, others seem to be waiting for rain.
Some of the 25 varieties of apple budsticks
used for grafting are growing.

Some of the larger apple grafts in the nursery, and the budsticks that had been in the refrigerator for a few months.
Bloom on an apple that should grow more before we let it produce.
Year-old tree from Kuffel Creek Nursery.

Rhubarb, asparagus, pomegranite, prickly pear cactus, honey locust and more.

Cory had high hopes for the disease (humidity) resistant 'Malika' variety of mango but it never bloomed in Port Margot since planting there in '08.

It is the first to bloom at Delice at about knee high. You never know for sure how a plant will respond to a new environment until you try.

A bonus for areas where theft is a problem is that it is best picked 2 weeks early and ripened indoors.

The neighboring fields continue to be hoed up and burned, heavy rains will soon wash away a few more inches of the thin remaining soil. We look forward to sharing more no-till alternatives to corn and beans!
