Knowing that the remaining American team would likely be leaving Haiti or at least the guest house in the morning I borrowed a phone and called my folks. While Cory and I both have Haitian phones they only worked the first night. I asked my folks to relay a message to Cory when I heard that a Wesleyan Medical clinic existed at the Carfou Fae Church site. It boiled down to "COME GET ME!!"
I did not look forward to being the only American at the guest house despite knowing that they would care for me as one of their own. Nor did I know how many days I could force my feet to walk to face the same type of day that I had just experienced. I needed to see some familiar faces. To work along side those who I knew already and would walk through the coming days and weeks with. I needed to connect with my team especially since the teams that had taken me in were now gone or leaving.
I learned that the team's guys, who were at the Villa, had been taking turns as watchmen at nights because of the wall being down. Many of the team had spent each night sleeping on their mattresses under the trees. Now they would be gone. I'm thankful for the company, comfort and stuff that they left me. [Snacks, skirts, shirts, hairbrush, shampoo, water-bottle.......and prayers!]
In the rush to leave home and catch a ride I neglected to put in my Bible. I'm so very thankful for the verses the kids and I memorized as well as the old fashioned hymns. Both brought much comfort to my life during the uncertain days I lived through.
While at the Villa I read Psalm 40 several times from a borrowed Bible. The verses that spoke the most to me:
1-3
I waited patiently for the Lord;
And He inclined to me,
and heard my cry.
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit.
Out of the miry clay,
and set my feet upon a rock,
and established my steps.
He has put a new song in my mouth-
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the Lord.
13
Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me;
O Lord, make haste to help me!
16-17
Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
Let such as love Your salvation say continually,
"The Lord be magnified!"
But I am poor and needy;
Yet the Lord thinks upon me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
Do not delay, O my God.
